RP bets top Nuvali duathlon

Robeno Javier barely won over Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Ryan Mendoza while national cyclist Marites Bitbit dominated her rivals in the opening leg of the Columbia Trailmasters Duathlon held at the Nuvali in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, last Sunday.

Javier won the 40-kilometer run-bike-run contest in one hour, 46 minutes and 14 seconds to bag P20,000 in cash and gift certificates.

Mendoza checked in five seconds later.

“I jumped at the chance to beat Ryan when I saw him slow down,” said the 24-year-old Pangasinense who placed sixth in the recent Mekong ITU Duathlon Series in Thailand.

The 31-year-old Mendoza settled for P8,000. Roldan Antonio (1:48.21) won P6,000 for placing third.

Bitbit banked on her cycling prowess in the 30-K bike stage to handily cop the women’s title, crossing the finish line in 2:00.26.

Mirasol Abad (2:11.51) and Bing Alto (2:15.06) placed second and third, respectively. Romina S. Austria
